Beautiful Cities

Portugal has so many Beautiful Cities that they could fill a website all by themselves. This collection has been put together one by one as I have traveled through this wonderful country. I will be adding to this list as I visit and enjoy the many locations I have on my wish list, and report back to you about what I found on each Wayward Drift.

Lisbon

Lisbon is old-world charm mixed with modern energy. Think pastel buildings, tiled façades (azulejos), hilltop viewpoints, trams rattling through narrow streets, and cafés that turn into wine bars by night. It’s relaxed, walkable (but hilly), and deeply soulful.

Porto

Porto is gritty-beautiful. Granite buildings, steep riverbanks, tiled churches, iron balconies, and the slow flow of the Douro create a city that feels real and lived-in.

Coimbra

Coimbra feels timeless and scholarly. The city revolves around its ancient university, steep streets, stone buildings, and the slow curve of the Mondego River.

Braga

Braga feels traditional yet alive. It’s known as the religious heart of Portugal, but it’s far from sleepy. Universities, cafés, and parks give it a modern rhythm beneath the centuries-old surface.

Lagos

Lagos feels sun-soaked and easygoing. Life revolves around the ocean—beaches, cliffs, cafés, and evening strolls along the marina.
